The Sea Wolf Essay -- essays research papers
The crew of the seal hunting ship the Ghost stood in disbelief as they gazed upon their recently departed first mate. Then a most unusual thing occurred. The captain began yelling at the dead man like a raging storm. Oaths rolled from his lips in a continuous stream. And they were not nice and thoughtful words or mere expressions of indecency. Each word was a blasphemy, and there were many words. It is this lack of remorse for others that defines Wolf Larsen, the antagonist in The Seal Wolf by Jack London.à à à à à From the beginning of the book you are introduced to the contrast of characters at hand. The feeble gentleman Humphrey Van Weydon, who is cruelly forced upon the voyage, and the devilish and somewhat divine captain Wolf Larsen. This combination of good and evil sets the stage for an amazing battle of wit and perseverance. But to understand the great battle between these two men, you have to understand the almost invincible nature of Captain Wolf Larsen. Wolf is a five foot ten inch, tan skinned brute. His height is not at all the most striking characteristic of the captain. His amazing muscular build and strength rival that of an enlarged gorilla. In fact, the author repeatedly compares Wolfââ¬â¢s immense strength with that of a wild animal. The name London gives him is perfect to describe his nature. It is this godlike ability to kill anyone with his bare hands that keeps the crew in fear of him. There is a scene in the book where the crew atte...

Akeelah and the Bee
Akeelah was very successful in her Spelling Bee competitions. How many different learning skills are there in this movie to help all the spellers learn? Akeelahââ¬â¢s learning skills are what help her move further and further into the spelling bee. Basically, everyone in this movie has a different way of studying or learning. Akeelah, is a smart 11 year old girl who attends Crenshaw Middle School. She didnââ¬â¢t need to study for her spelling test, because she didnââ¬â¢t make mistakes on her tests. Akeelah doesnââ¬â¢t really fit in at school, sheââ¬â¢s afraid of acting like sheââ¬â¢s smarter than her friends or classmates. Before she goes for the Crenshaw School wide Spelling Bee, she studies alone. This makes her a Intrapersonal Learner in the beinging of the story. The principle wanted Dr. Larabee to coach her for the Regional Spelling Bee. Akeelah tells her principle no that does not need to be coached. She wanted to study alone. When Akeelah finally agrees to mee t with Dr. Larabee. She still very standoffish. She acted stubborn and hardheaded that she doesnââ¬â¢t need any help. So she ends up study by herself for the District Spelling Bee. She was very scared and nervous when she goes on the stage to spell because of all the people. She won tenth and made to the Regional Bee. There at the District Spelling Bee she befriends Javier a Mexican boy and fellow speller. He invites her to a spelling club at his school. The spelling club conducts itself outside on a basketball court as they pass the ball to each other to spell words. That makes me think that Javier is a Body/ Kinesthetic learner because he learns through body sensation moves around by playing basketball and spelling words. He also falls into Naturalistic learner because heââ¬â¢s outside while playing basketball and spelling words.Akeelah falls under the same two category but she does it a little different. She bounces the balls as she spells each letter. Another reason why I f eel this way is because she likes to be outside when studies her words. She overcomes her stage fright at the Regional Spelling Bee sheââ¬â¢s a lot more confident. This is where I noticed that Akeelah is Verbal/ Linguistic learner. I then noticed another habit that she taps her hand on her leg as she says each letter. Just like when she was bouncing the basketball, again another example of her being a Body/ Kinesthetic learner.Dr. Larabee gives her a jump rope to spell the words as she spells, because she keeps time to spell better. This would make her musical/ rhythm because sheââ¬â¢s keeping the rhythm as she jumps even when she taps on the side of her leg. Akeelah finally decides to apologize to Dr. Larabee so he can coach her. He doesnââ¬â¢t only want her to learn the words but life lessons as well. Dr. Larabee seems to be a Verbal/ Linguistic learner because he is a teacher and he communicates well through language and is a good speller. He was a former spelling bee co mpetitor when he was younger.Dr. Larabee also seems to be a Intrapersonal learner like Akeelah towards the end of the movie. The reason why I feel this way is because ,he wants to be alone doesnââ¬â¢t want to teach Akeelah any more. Dr. Larabee feels that teaching her is unpredictable. He gives her 5,000 flashcards to learn on her own. Akeelah gets overwhelmed with all those words, that she loses her motivation. With all the help of the neighborhood she learned all the words. As she was learning all these words she was using her jump rope outside going up and down the street. This is another example of her being a Body/ Kinesthetic and a Naturalistic learner. Because she moving her body and sheââ¬â¢s outside while she does it. She makes it to National Spelling bee in Washington, D. C. Everything goes great because of her using a fake jump rope on stage to spell her words. The two finalist were Akeelah and Dylan, a Chinese boy who has won second place in the last two National Sp elling Beeââ¬â¢s. He is very contemptuous of her. Dylanââ¬â¢s father will not settle for second best.Dylan seems to be a Visual/ Spatial learner because he memorizes his words instead of learning them. They both win the National Championship. Mnemonic devices were used by all the spellers in this movie, because they would learn the spelling words. Then they use them when they would need them. For example they would use the word when they were ask to spell it In conclusion, most of the charactersââ¬â¢ in this movie all had different learning styleââ¬â¢s. But was also about the pursuit to pursuit to excellence the spellerââ¬â¢s used. The difference between cramming and learning.

(CIDB, 2003)As a result, many companies are now searching for skilled labour to meet their needs. The shortage of skilled labour can result from an increase in the demand for labour. (Liew, Wee Yee, 2005), this can be interpreted as demand is more than supply. There are several diverse factors have contributed to the construction industrys shortages of skilled workers; these factors include local and young generation unwilling to join, wages problem, poor industry image, working environment and condition, government policy, economic factor. 3.1.1 Local and Young generation unwilling to join In Malaysia, local youths would rather be unemployed despite working in the construction industry. This is attributed to the archaic employment practices, outdoor work and prevalence of the temporary and casual labour. (Saleh [emailprotected]/* */, 2008). Usually people will feel the construction workers lack superiority, class and respectability. Youngster is not willing to take over the manual techniques from their parent (skilled worker). This will leave to the skills gaps which will leave by old generation who are retirement. Youngster prefers work that is less strenuous with more comfortable working conditions. According to Ng Seing Liong, à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âNow that I sit on the CIDB, I know it is facing a lot of problems. It cant find Malaysians to be trained in the wet trades, such as masonry, carpentry. In comparison, Indonesian workers are so easily available.à ¢Ã¢â ¬? The statement above meant for the local, ità ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s very difficult to find the Malaysian to do as a construction worker compared to foreign worker. 3.1.2 Wages problem Working as construction worker, the wage is usually paid on daily basis. For example, if that construction worker unable to work that particular working day, will cause no income for that day. According to report for Average Daily Wage Rate of Construction Workers and Machine Plant Operator January 2009, the wages for skilled worker will higher compared to unskilled worker and the scale of wage is also different from each state/ area in the Malaysia. Besides that, the poor paymaster (MBAM, 2007) also becomes the major issue in the Construction industry. Income is the major consideration for people to entry the industry. Issues as above mentioned will create a barrier for people choose to work in construction industry. Statement above can be proved by Master Builders Association Malaysia (MBAM) president Datuk Ng Kee Lee, he had mentioned that the Act was vital to protect the interests of all players in the construction industry and the association had appealed to the Malaysia govern ment to bring the Act into force. 3.1.3 Poor industry image Construction industry usually related to 3D, which is dirty, dangerous and difficult. (CIDB, 2005) Local people are not willing to participate into the construction industry. In Malaysia, almost 90% of construction workers whether skilled or unskilled are foreign worker which come from neighboring countries. (CIDB, 2005) The irresponsible employer/ contractor which wish to save the construction cost will usually ignore the safety of workers by provided the worker with minimum insurance. Besides that, appeared of poor paymaster and a great of number of press which report the incident of site accident contributes to the skilled shortage issue. One of the issues of most concern to construction workers throughout the world is the insecurity of income that comes with temporary status. Providing adequate insurance against periods of sickness or unemployment as well as medical and retirement benefits is of critical importance in attracting and retaining workers in the industry (ILO, 2007). In conclusion, every construction party have to work out together to à ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"washà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ the image of construction industry. 3.1.4 Working environment and condition Executive director of the Malaysian Employers Federation said that Malaysian workers are not willing to work on a plantation or construction site because it is hard work under the sun. Many of the 26 millions Malaysian workers want white collar jobs (Bloomberg News, 2005). In Malaysia, tough working condition is also is the barrier for people to entry the industry. The construction industry is unique among industries. The activities of construction often take place outdoor risky conditions which not safety and healthy and extremely hot weather. Workers in the construction sites have to face persistent change in the nature of work, the location of work and the mix of workers. The nature of most accidents at construction recurrent and serious shows that the construction industry is unique. As buildings become higher and larger, the possibility of accidents to occur also increases. The danger posed to personal safety by construction work is one of the reasons why Malaysian is unwilling to take up careers in it. According to Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, an average of eighty workers was killed in such accidents. Inspection conducted by Department of Safety and Health (DOSH) found that one of the main contributory factors of accidents at construction sites was the lack of commitment by employers to implement measures to improve occupational safety and health. Construction sites rated as unsatisfactory were not managed in accordance to best practices. And most of the time, were not in compliance with the laws and regulations governing construction activities. Accidents at the construction site do not only involve workers, but may also inflict injury or even cause death to the general public. Such accidents had tarnished the image of construction industry. In conclusion, the poor working environment and condition is also contributed to the skilled labour shortage problem in Malaysia. 3.1.5 Government policy The latest report revealed that there were approximately 1.9 million foreign workers in Malaysia. These foreign workers were dustribute across sectors such as manufacturing (39 %), construction (19 %), plantation (14 %), housemaids (12 %), services (10 %), remainder were in agriculture sector.(accessed to www.themalaysianinsider.com) From the figure above, we can know that 19% of 1.9 million foreign worker is work in construction industry. The government of Malaysia move to diminish the number of foreign workers in the country to 1.5 million by 2010 will even worsen the issues of construction skilled labour shortage as the local already less interested working as skilled worker in the construction industry. The policy will stop the potential construction skilled worker which can come to our country for working. 3.1.6 Economic Factor The strong growth of the Malaysia economy prompt by the influx of investments, job opportunities have increased resulting in the easing of the unemployment rate. (Saleh [emailprotected]/* */, 2008) In construction industry, foreign investment had causes the supply of property increase; supply of property increase will also affect the construction skilled workers intensive. Skilled worker play an important roles in construction industry. Without them, construction industry will be affected, thus, it has now become an employeeà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s market and therefore, workers can afford to be choosy. Skilled workerà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s wages will increase, then for employer which came from minor financial will not be able to hire skilled worker. 3.1.7 Change in Education More recently, another change that has affected the inflow of new labour in construction industry is the educational change that has impacted younger generation. More people are seeking higher education in an effort to secure a more lucrative profession and consequently live a better life than their parents did. It appears that here, a stigma is being cast upon construction trades as dirty, dangerous and difficult. The term construction worker has negative impact for young people. Most commonly see the construction worker lacks prestige, class and respectability. It is projected that the proportion of the overall labour force with tertiary education to increase to 21.1 per cent in 2006 (20 percent in 2005) in line with the government.s concerted efforts at enhancing the quality of human capital in the country (Bernama, 2001).

Gump and Co. Chapter 9 Free Essays
Chapter 9 For a while, it looked like I was off the hook, but of course it turned out that was wrong. Not long after my testimony they carted Ivan Bozosky an Mike Mulligan off to prison. The judge, he thowed the book at them ââ¬â literally ââ¬â big ole law book, hit Bozosky square in the head. We will write a custom essay sample on Gump and Co. Chapter 9 or any similar topic only for you Order Now Next day, a knock come at my door. Standin there was two military police in shiny black helmets with billy clubs an armbands. ââ¬Å"You PFC Gump?â⬠one says. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s my name.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, you gotta come along with us, account of you is AWOL from the United States Army.â⬠ââ¬Å"AWOL,â⬠I says. ââ¬Å"How can that be? I was in jail!â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah,â⬠he says, ââ¬Å"we know all about that. But your hitch runs two more years ââ¬â thatââ¬â¢s what you signed up for with Colonel North. We been lookin for you everplace until we seen you in the newspapers in this Bozosky trial.â⬠The MP hands me a copy of the New York Post, which reads: Dullard Rats out on High-Rolling Financial Men A man with an IQ described as ââ¬Å"in the low 70sâ⬠yesterday finked on two of this newspaperââ¬â¢s most popular subjects, resulting in their sentencing to lengthy prison terms. Forrest Gump, who sources close to the Post described as being ââ¬Å"dumber than a rock,â⬠testified before a federal judge in Manhattan that in his capacity as president of the insider trading division of Bozosky Enterprises, he had absolutely no knowledge of any insider trading at the company. Gump, who has had an apparently checkered career as an encyclopedia salesman, inventor, animal refuse engineer, and sometime spy for the U.S. government, was not immediately available for comment. He was not convicted in the trial, which lasted several weeks. ââ¬Å"So what you gonna do with me?â⬠I ast. ââ¬Å"They probly gonna put you in the stockade till they figger out somethin,â⬠the MP says. About this time, little Forrest come up behin me, tryin to see whatââ¬â¢s goin on. ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s this?â⬠the MP ast. ââ¬Å"This your boy?â⬠I didnââ¬â¢t say nothin, an neither did little Forrest. He just glared at the MPs. ââ¬Å"You give me a minute with him?â⬠I says. ââ¬Å"I ainââ¬â¢t gonna run off or nothin.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, I reckon thatââ¬â¢d be okay. Weââ¬â¢ll be outside here ââ¬â Just donââ¬â¢t do nothin funny.â⬠Fact was, funny was not on my mind at this moment. I shut the door an set little Forrest down on the sofa. ââ¬Å"Look,â⬠I says, ââ¬Å"them fellers come to take me back to the army, an I gotta go with em, you know? Soââ¬â¢s I want you to get a bus back home an be ready to start school when it opens. Okay?â⬠The little guy was statin at his shoes an not lookin at me, but he nodded his head. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry about this,â⬠I says, ââ¬Å"but thatââ¬â¢s just the way things go sometimes.â⬠He nodded again. ââ¬Å"Look,â⬠I tole him, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m gonna try to work somethin out. Iââ¬â¢ll talk to Colonel North. They ainââ¬â¢t gonna keep me in the stockade forever. Iââ¬â¢ll get this straightened out, an then weââ¬â¢ll make a plan.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, right,â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"You got a lot of great plans, donââ¬â¢t you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, I made my mistakes. But somethinââ¬â¢s gotta work out. I figger Iââ¬â¢ve had my share of bad luck. Itââ¬â¢s about time things start to break good.â⬠He gets up an goes back to his room to start packin. At the door, he turn aroun an looks at me for the first time. ââ¬Å"Okay,â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"You ever get out of the slammer, you look me up. An donââ¬â¢t worry about it, hear? Iââ¬â¢ll be all right.â⬠An so I gone on with the MPs, feelin pretty low an pretty alone. Little Forrest is a good-lookin, smart young man by now, an I done let him down again. Well, just like the MPs said, when we got back to Washington, they put me in the stockade ââ¬â thowed in jail again. But ainââ¬â¢t long afore they come an turn me loose. When I got there, I done sent a note to Colonel North, say I think Iââ¬â¢m gettin a raw deal here. Couple of months later, he stops by the stockade. ââ¬Å"Sorry about that, Gump, but there ainââ¬â¢t much I can do,â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"I am no longer in the Marine Corps, an Iââ¬â¢m pretty busy these days watchin out for some of the Ayatoljaââ¬â¢s friends who say they want to kill me. Besides, Iââ¬â¢m thinkin about runnin for the U.S. Senate. Iââ¬â¢ll show them bastids what contempt really is.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, Colonel,â⬠I says, ââ¬Å"that is all very nice, but what about me?â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s what you get for makin fools of Congress,â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"See you aroun the stockade.â⬠An then he bust out laughin. ââ¬Å"You know what I mean?â⬠Anyhow, after a few more months on bread an water, I am summoned to the post commanderââ¬â¢s office. ââ¬Å"Gump,â⬠he says, ââ¬Å"you just stand at attention while I look over your files.â⬠After about half an hour, he says, ââ¬Å"At ease,â⬠an leans back in his chair. ââ¬Å"Well, Gump, I see you have a very mixed record in this manââ¬â¢s army. Win the Congressional Medal of Honor, and then you go over the hill. Just what kind of crapola is that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Sir, I didnââ¬â¢t go over the hill. I was in jail.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, well thatââ¬â¢s just as bad. If it was up to me, Iââ¬â¢d have you cashiered today with a bad-conduct discharge. But it seems some of the brass donââ¬â¢t cotton much to havin Medal of Honor winners booted out of the service. Looks bad, I guess. So we got to figger out what to do with you. Got any suggestions?â⬠ââ¬Å"Sir, if you let me out of the stockade, maybe I can go on KP or somethin,â⬠I says. ââ¬Å"Not on your life, Gump. I read all about your KP escapades right here in these files. Says here that one time you blew up a steam boiler tryin to make a stew or somethin. Wrecked the mess hall. Cost the army an arm and a leg. Nosiree ââ¬â you ainââ¬â¢t going anywhere near a mess hall on my post.â⬠Then he scratch his chin for a minute. ââ¬Å"I think I got a solution, Gump. I ainââ¬â¢t got use for any troublemakers around here, so what Iââ¬â¢m gonna do is, Iââ¬â¢m gonna transfer your big ass as far away as I possibly can, an the sooner the better. That is all.â⬠An so I am transferred. The commander, he was not kiddin about transferrin me to the fartherest place away he could find. Next thing I know, I am assigned to a army weather station in Alaska ââ¬â in January, no less. But at least they begun payin me again, soââ¬â¢s I can send home some allotment money for little Forrest. Matter of fact, I done sent nearly all my pay home, account of what in hell Iââ¬â¢m gonna spend it on up in Alaska? In January. ââ¬Å"I see by your files, Gump, that you have had a somewhat checkered past in the service,â⬠says the lieutenant in charge of the weather station. ââ¬Å"Just keep your nose clean, an they wonââ¬â¢t be any trouble.â⬠In this, of course, he was wrong. It was so cold in Alaska that if you went outside an said somethin, your words would freeze themsefs in the air ââ¬â an if you took a pee, it would wind up as a icicle. My job was sposed to be readin weather maps an stuff, but after a few weeks, they figgered out I am a numbnuts, an give me the job of moppin the place clean an spit-shinin the toilets an so on. On my day off Iââ¬â¢d go out ice-fishin, an one time I got chased by a polar bear an another time by a big ole walrus that ate up all the fish Iââ¬â¢d caught. We was in a little ole town there by the ocean where all the people spent most of they time gettin drunk ââ¬â Exkimos included. The Exkimos was very nice people, except when they got drunk an had harpoon-thowin contests in the street. Then, it could be dangerous to be out an about. One time after a couple of months, I went with some of the other fellers into town on a Saturday night. I really didnââ¬â¢t much want to go, but in fact I had not been anyplace much, an so I gone along, for the ride, so to speak. We got to a place called the Gold Rush Saloon an went inside. They was all sorts of activity there ââ¬â folks be drinkin an fightin an gamblin, an a striptease artist was doin her thing on the bar. Sorta made me think of Wandaââ¬â¢s strip joint, down in New Orleans, an I figgered I probly should drop her a postcard sometime. Also got me to thinkin about ole Wanda the pig, little Forrestââ¬â¢s pet, an how she was doin, an then, of course, I got to thinkin about little Forrest hissef. But since thinkin ainââ¬â¢t exactly my strong point, I decided to take action. I gone out into the street to buy little Forrest a present. It is about seven P.M. but the sun is shinin bright as can be up here near the North Pole, an all the stores is open. Most of em, however, is saloons. There wadnââ¬â¢t no department store around, soââ¬â¢s I gone on into a novelty shop where they is peddlin everthin from gold nuggets to eagle feathers, but finally I seen what I wanted to get for little Forrest. A genuine Alaska Indian totem pole! It was not one of them big ole ten-feet-tall totem poles, but it was about three feet, anyway, an was carved with eagleââ¬â¢s beaks an faces of stern-lookin Indians an bearââ¬â¢s paws an all, an painted pretty bright colors. I ast the feller at the counter how much, an he says, ââ¬Å"For you army grunts I make a special price ââ¬â one thousan, two hundrit, and six dollars.â⬠ââ¬Å"Damn,â⬠I says. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢d it cost before the discount?â⬠ââ¬Å"For me to know an you to find outâ⬠was his reply. Well, anyhow, I stood there figgerin that it is gettin late an I donââ¬â¢t know when Iââ¬â¢m gonna get back into town an little Forrest probly need to hear from me, so I dug down deep into my pocket for what was left of my paychedcs an bought the totem pole. ââ¬Å"Could you ship it down to Mobile, Alabama?â⬠I ast. ââ¬Å"Sure, for another four hundrit dollars,â⬠he says. Well, who was I to argue? After all, we are within spittin distance of the top of the world, soââ¬â¢s I dug down again an coughed up the money, figgerin wouldnââ¬â¢t have nothin much to spend it on up here anyhow. I ast him if I could send a note with it, an he says, ââ¬Å"Sure, but notes are another fifty bucks.â⬠But I thought, what the hell, this is a genuine antique Alaska Indian totem pole, an I am already gettin a bargin. Soââ¬â¢s I wrote the note, which said this: Dear little Forrest, I spose you been wonderin what has become of me up here in Alaska. Well, I have been workin very hard at a very important job with the United States Army an have not had much time to write. I am sendin you a totem pole to fool with. The Indians here say they is very sacred objects, so you should put it someplace important to you. I hope you is doin well in school an mindin your grandma. Loveâ⬠¦ Well, I started to put ââ¬Å"Love, Dad,â⬠but he ainââ¬â¢t never called me that, so I just put my name. I figgered he just have to figger out the rest. Anyhow, time I got back to the bar my guys had proceeded to get drunk. I was just settin at the bar nursin a beer when I noticed a feller in a chair all slumped over a table. I could only see half his face, but somehow he looked familiar, an I gone on over an walked aroun him a couple of times, an lo an behole, if it ainââ¬â¢t Mister McGivver from the pig-shit farm! I raised up his head an sort of shook him awake. At first he donââ¬â¢t recognize me, which is understandable, account of there is a mostly empty quart of gin on the table. But then a light sort of come on in his eyes an he jumps up an give me a big hug. I figger he is gonna be real mad at me for lettin the pig shit blow up, but in fact, he ainââ¬â¢t. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t worry yourself, my boy,â⬠Mister McGivver says. ââ¬Å"It was all probably a blessing in disguise anyway. I never dreamed the pig-shit operation would get that big, but once it did, I was under such pressure to keep up with things, it probably was taking years off my life. Maybe you even did me a favor.â⬠As it turns out, of course, Mister McGivver has lost everthin. When the pig-shit farm blowed up, the townspeople an the environmental people shut him down an ran him out of town. Next, because he had borrowed so much money to build the pig-shit-fueled ships, the banks foreclosed on him an thew him out of bidness entirely. ââ¬Å"But thatââ¬â¢s all right, Forrest,â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"The sea was my first love anyway. I didnââ¬â¢t have any business being an executive or a magnate. Why, hell, right now Iââ¬â¢m doing exactly what I want to.â⬠When I ast him what was that, he tole me. ââ¬Å"I am a shipââ¬â¢s captain,â⬠he says proudly. ââ¬Å"Got me a big ole ship out in the harbor right now. You want to see it?â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, I gotta get back to the weather station in a while; is it gonna take long?â⬠ââ¬Å"No time at all, my boy, no time at all.â⬠In this, Mister McGivver was never more wrong in his life. We gone on out to his ship in a launch. At first I thought the launch was the ship, but when we finally got there, I couldnââ¬â¢t believe my eyes. The ship is so big that from a distance it looks like a mountain range! It is about half a mile long an twenty stories high. Exxon-Valdez is the shipââ¬â¢s name. ââ¬Å"Climb aboard,â⬠Mister McGivver shouts. It is cold as a well diggerââ¬â¢s ass, but we climbed up the ladder an gone onto the shipââ¬â¢s bridge. Mister McGivver pulls out a big bottle of scotch an offers me a drink, but since I gotta get back to the weather station, I turn it down. He proceeds to drink it hissef, no ice, no water, just straight in the glass, an we talked over ole times for a while. ââ¬Å"Ya know, Forrest, thereââ¬â¢s one thing Iââ¬â¢d have given a lot of money to see,â⬠he says, ââ¬Å"that is, if Iââ¬â¢d had any.â⬠ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s that?â⬠ââ¬Å"The expressions on those bozosââ¬â¢ faces when the pig shit blew up.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yessir,â⬠I says, ââ¬Å"it was kinda a sight.â⬠ââ¬Å"By the way,â⬠Mister McGivver says, ââ¬Å"what ever happened to that sow I gave little Forrest ââ¬â whatââ¬â¢d you call her?â⬠ââ¬Å"Wanda.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, she was a nice pig. Smart pig.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s at the National Zoo in Washington.â⬠ââ¬Å"Really? Doing what?â⬠ââ¬Å"In a cage. They are showin her off.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, Iââ¬â¢ll be damned,â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"A monument to all our folly.â⬠After a little while, it become apparent to me that Mister McGivver is drunk again. In fact, he is not only drunk, he is reelin. At one point he reeled over to the ship control panels an begun turnin on switches an pullin levers an knobs. Suddenly, the Exxon-Valdez begun to shudder an tremble. Somehow, Mister McGivver had turned on the engine. ââ¬Å"Wanna go for a little spin?â⬠he ast. ââ¬Å"Well, ah, thanks,â⬠I says, ââ¬Å"but I gotta get back to the weather station. Iââ¬â¢m on duty in a hour or so.â⬠ââ¬Å"Nonsense!â⬠says Mister McGivver. ââ¬Å"This wonââ¬â¢t take but a few minutes. Weââ¬â¢ll just go out in the sound for a little spin.â⬠By now, he is lurchin an stumblin an tryin to put the Exxon-Valdez in gear. He grapped hold of the wheel an when it begin to turn he follered with it ââ¬â right down onto the floor. Then he begun to jabber. ââ¬Å"Hoot, mon!â⬠Mister McGivver shouts. ââ¬Å"I think Iââ¬â¢m about four sheets to the wind! Arrr, me buckoes, we be forty leagues from Portobello! Run out the guns! Youââ¬â¢ve a bit of the animal in you, young Jim ââ¬â Long John Silverââ¬â¢s my name ââ¬â Whatââ¬â¢s yoursâ⬠¦?â⬠Shit like that. Anyhow, I got ole Mister McGivver up off the floor, an about that time a sailor come onto the bridge, must of heard the commotion. ââ¬Å"I think Mister McGivverââ¬â¢s had one too many,â⬠I says. ââ¬Å"Maybe we oughta take him to his cabin.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah,â⬠say the sailor, ââ¬Å"but I seen him a lot drunker.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s the Black Spot for you, laddie buck!â⬠shouts Mister McGivver. ââ¬Å"Old Blind Pew knows the score. Hoist up the Jolly Roger! Youââ¬â¢ll all walk the plank!â⬠Me an the sailor carried Mister McGivver to his bunk an laid him down. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll keelhaul the lot of youâ⬠is the last thing Mister McGivver says. ââ¬Å"Say,â⬠the sailor ast, ââ¬Å"you know why Captain McGivver turned on the engines?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nope ââ¬â I donââ¬â¢t know nothin. Iââ¬â¢m with the weather station.â⬠ââ¬Å"What!â⬠says the sailor. ââ¬Å"Hell, I thought you were the bar pilot!â⬠ââ¬Å"Me, no. I am a private in the army.â⬠ââ¬Å"Greatgodamighty!â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"We got ten million gallons of crude oil on board!â⬠An he runs out the door. It was apparent I could not do nothin for Mister McGivver, account of he is asleep ââ¬â if thatââ¬â¢s what you want to call it. So I gone on back to the bridge. Nobody is there an the ship seems to be sailin along, buoy markers an things be passin us at top speed. I didnââ¬â¢t know what else to do, so I grapped the shipââ¬â¢s wheel an tried to steer us at least in a straight direction. We had not gone too far when suddenly there is a great big bump. I am figgerin this is good, since the Exxon-Valdez has finally stopped. Turns out, though, it is not. All of a sudden, it seems like there is about a hundrit people runnin around on the bridge, everbody hollerin an screamin an givin each other orders, an some of them even be givin each other the finger. Not long afterward, some fellers from the Coast Guard come aboard, complainin we has just dumped ten million gallons of crude awl into Prince William Sound. Birds, seals, fish, polar bears, whales, an Exkimos ââ¬â all will be destroyed by what we has now done. An there is gonna be hell to pay. ââ¬Å"Who was in charge on this bridge?â⬠says a Coast Guard officer. ââ¬Å"He was!â⬠everbody on the bridge shouted at once, all pointin they fingers right at me. I knowed right then that I am in the doghouse for sure. Maniac Army Man at Helm of Disaster Ship, says one of the headlines. Certified Nut Driving Oil Spill Boat, says another. Cataclysm Caused by Dangerous Fool; this is typical of the kind of shit I got to endure. In any case, they sent up a three-star general from Washington to deal with me an my problems. In a way this is sort of lucky, since the army does not wish to get involved in any sense with the blame for the Exxon-Valdez mess, an the best thing they can do is get me the hell out of there ââ¬â quick. ââ¬Å"Gump,â⬠the general says, ââ¬Å"if it was up to me, I would have you before a firing squad for this, but since it isnââ¬â¢t, I am gonna do the next best thing, which is to have your big stupid ass transferred as far away from here as possible, which, in this case, is to Berlin, Germany. Maybe, if we are lucky, nobody is gonna be able to find you there, and so theyââ¬â¢ll have to put all the blame on old Captain McGivver for this disaster. Do you read me?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yessir,â⬠I says, ââ¬Å"but how Iââ¬â¢m gonna get there?â⬠ââ¬Å"The plane, Gump, is on the runway. Its motors are running. You got five minutes.â⬠How to cite Gump and Co.
